Origin: West Africa
Type: Rhizome plant
Growth Rate: Slow
Size: Height: 15–30 cm (6–12 in) Width: 15–25 cm (6–10 in)
Natural Habitat: Anubias species occur in shaded rainforest streams of West Africa, where they attach themselves to rocks, driftwood, and tree roots in areas with steady current and filtered light.
Special Considerations: Do not bury the rhizome in substrate, as this may cause rot. Attach the plant to rocks or driftwood and allow the roots to anchor naturally.
Did You Know?
The genus Anubias was named after Anubis, the Egyptian god associated with the underworld. Botanists chose this name because these plants thrive in dark, shaded environments—conditions where many other aquatic plants struggle to survive.
Tank Size: Suitable for aquariums 20 L (5 gallons) or larger, including nano aquascapes.
Plant Placement: Best used as a midground hardscape plant attached to rocks or driftwood. It pairs beautifully with background plants such as Rotala orange juice or Limnophila sessiliflora, while mosses like Java moss or Flame moss can be attached nearby to create natural forest-style aquascapes. Smaller midground plants like Bucephalandra or Cryptocoryne species can enhance the layered look.
Compatibility: Extremely versatile and compatible with many aquarium species including betta fish, gouramis, angelfish, Corydoras, shrimp, and snails. The sturdy leaves often serve as resting spots for betta fish and gouramis, while shrimp such as Amano shrimp and cherry shrimp graze on biofilm that forms on the leaf surfaces.
Substrate: Rhizome should not be buried; attach to rocks or driftwood.
Light: Low to moderate lighting (20–40 PAR) for 6–8 hours daily.
Temperature: 22–28 °C (72–82 °F)
pH: 6.0 – 7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (3–12 dGH)
CO₂: Not required.
Care & Propagation: Growth is slow and requires little maintenance. Propagate by dividing the rhizome into sections with several leaves. Over time the plant forms attractive clusters.
Portion Size 1 carefully selected rhizome plant attached to natural lava rock, ready for aquarium placement.
Plant Size Plants are typically 5–7 cm (2–3 in) tall depending on the species and growth stage.
Plant Type Rhizome plant securely attached to lava rock for easy placement in the aquarium.
Snail-Free & Aquarium Safe Plants are grown without chemicals that could harm fish, shrimp, or other aquarium inhabitants and are carefully inspected to ensure they are snail-free.
Transition After Shipping Some older leaves may change appearance as the plant adapts to new aquarium conditions. Healthy new leaves will grow from the rhizome.
