Origin: Southeast Asia (cultivated variety)
Type: Rhizome plant
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
Size: Height: 15–25 cm (6–10 in) Width: 15–20 cm (6–8 in)
Natural Habitat: Java ferns naturally grow along shaded tropical streams where they anchor themselves to submerged wood, rocks, and tree roots in areas with steady water flow.
Special Considerations: Attach the rhizome to hardscape such as driftwood or rocks rather than burying it in substrate. Moderate water movement helps keep the leaves clean and free of debris.
Did You Know?
Many Java fern varieties were developed through selective cultivation in aquatic plant nurseries. Growers observed natural mutations in leaf shape and growth patterns, then propagated those plants to create distinctive cultivars such as ‘Black Forest’ with darker foliage and unique leaf structures.
Tank Size: 20 L (5 gallons) or larger recommended.
Plant Placement: Often attached to driftwood or rock structures in the midground, where its dark leaves create a forest-like effect in aquascapes. It pairs nicely with tall background plants such as Rotala nanjenshan or Hygrophila polysperma, while mosses like Taiwan moss or Spiky moss can enhance the natural look of the hardscape.
Compatibility: Compatible with a wide range of aquarium species including tetras, rasboras, dwarf gouramis, Corydoras, shrimp, and snails. The firm leaves provide resting surfaces for fish and grazing areas for shrimp such as Amano shrimp and crystal shrimp. The dark foliage also contrasts beautifully with silver fish like rummynose tetras.
Substrate: Rhizome should remain above substrate and attached to wood or stone.
Light: Low to medium lighting (20–40 PAR) for 6–8 hours daily.
Temperature: 22–28 °C (72–82 °F)
pH: 6.0 – 7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (3–12 dGH)
CO₂: Optional.
Care & Propagation: Propagate by dividing the rhizome or separating plantlets that develop on mature leaves. Minimal trimming is required due to its slow growth.
Portion Size 1 carefully selected rhizome plant attached to natural lava rock, ready for aquarium placement.
