🌟 Bucephalandra “Crocodile Land” stands out for its textured leaf structure, adding movement and complexity to aquascapes. Its distinctive serrated edges create a more dynamic appearance compared to smoother-leaf Buce varieties.

View full details

Unique textured leaf structure
The serrated edges create visual movement and stand out among smoother plants.

Strong contrast in mixed plant layouts
Works well alongside round or flat-leaf species by adding shape variation.

Ideal for Nature Aquarium and jungle-style aquascapes
Adds depth and complexity without overpowering the layout.

Maintains a natural, slightly wild appearance
Less uniform growth makes layouts feel more organic.

Grows steadily without frequent trimming
Keeps its form while gradually expanding over time.

Origin: Borneo (Kalimantan region)

Type: Rhizome plant

Growth Rate: Slow

Size: Height: 5–10 cm (2–4 in) Width: 6–12 cm (2–5 in)

Natural Habitat: Bucephalandra “Crocodile Land” grows attached to rocks and driftwood in shaded tropical streams, where steady current and mineral-rich water support slow, stable development.

Special Considerations: Moderate to strong lighting enhances leaf texture and edge definition. Stable conditions promote more pronounced serration, while inconsistent parameters may result in flatter leaves. Do not bury the rhizome, as this can cause rot.

Did You Know? The characteristic “crocodile” texture becomes more defined as leaves mature, meaning younger growth may appear smoother before developing fully serrated edges.

Tank Size: Suitable for aquariums 20 L (5 gallons) or larger

Plant Placement: Best used as a midground accent attached to rocks or driftwood where its textured leaves are clearly visible. Works well along hardscape edges or slightly elevated positions to highlight its structure. Pairs effectively with smoother plants such as Anubias barteri and Bucephalandra “Belindae”, creating strong contrast in leaf shape. For color layering, combine with stem plants like Rotala rotundifolia “Orange Juice”, Ludwigia repens “Rubin”, and Alternanthera reineckii “Mini” in the background. Mosses such as Taxiphyllum barbieri (Java moss) or Taxiphyllum sp. “Flame moss” can be placed nearby to create natural transitions between plants and hardscape.

Compatibility: Suitable for mixed community aquariums including ember tetras, harlequin rasboras, Endler’s livebearers, honey gouramis, Corydoras species, and shrimp such as Amano shrimp, cherry shrimp, and blue dream shrimp. The plant adds structure without creating dense cover, allowing fish to interact freely while still providing subtle areas for exploration and grazing.

Substrate: Rhizome should not be buried; attach to rocks or driftwood

Light: Low to medium (20–50 PAR) for 6–8 hours daily

Temperature: 20–27 °C (68–80 °F)

pH: 6.0 – 7.5

Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (3–12 dGH)

CO₂: Not required, but improves leaf definition and growth consistency

Care & Propagation: Growth is slow and stable under consistent conditions. Over time, the rhizome produces additional growth points and forms clusters. Propagate by dividing the rhizome into sections with healthy leaves and roots.

Portion Size 2 carefully selected rhizome plant 5-6cm, ready for aquarium placement

Plant Size Plants are typically 4–8 cm (1.5–3 in) tall depending on growth stage

Plant Type Rhizome plant suitable for attachment to hardscape

Snail-Free & Aquarium Safe
Plants are grown without chemicals harmful to fish, shrimp, or other aquarium inhabitants and are carefully inspected to ensure they are snail-free

Transition After Shipping
Some older leaves may change appearance as the plant adapts to new aquarium conditions. Healthy new leaves will develop from the rhizome

Planting Guide

  1. Remove the protective plastic packaging
  2. Rinse the plant gently with clean water
  3. Attach the plant to rock or driftwood using glue or thread
  4. Ensure the rhizome remains above the substrate and is not buried
  5. Place in a stable area with low to moderate light

If preferred, you may reposition the plant after it begins to establish

Tip
Position this plant where light hits from the side or slightly from the front to highlight its textured leaf edges.
Aquascaping tweezers and scissors from your aquascaping tool set make it easier to position plants and adjust surrounding growth without disturbing the layout.
