Alternanthera “Rosanervig”

Quantity

❤️ Alternanthera “Rosanervig” is a striking red stem plant known for its distinctive pink-veined leaves and vibrant coloration. Its unique patterning sets it apart from other red plants, making it a standout feature in aquascapes where detail and contrast are key. It works especially well in midground to background placements, adding both texture and visual interest.

🌸 Expert Level: This demanding species flourishes under carefully managed conditions and rewards dedicated care with extraordinary visual character.

Unique vein-driven coloration instead of solid red
The pink venation creates a layered visual effect that adds complexity beyond typical red stem plants.

Color shifts with lighting and nutrients
Displays more green tones in moderate setups and develops stronger contrast and pink highlights under higher light.

Adds fine texture to plant groupings
Leaf patterning introduces detail that breaks up uniform plant masses in Dutch layouts.

More forgiving than many red plants
Maintains acceptable growth even without extreme conditions, while still improving significantly with optimization.

Creates natural transition zones
Blends well between green and red plants, making it useful for soft color gradients in aquascapes.

Origin: Cultivated form of Alternanthera (South America)

Type: Stem plant

Growth Rate: Medium

Size: Height: 15–30 cm (6–12 in) Width: 8–15 cm (3–6 in)

Natural Habitat: The parent species grows in periodically flooded riverbanks and wetlands where plants alternate between submerged and emersed growth. These environments expose the plant to fluctuating light intensity and nutrient availability, which contributes to its variable coloration and adaptive leaf structure.

Special Considerations: The characteristic pink veining becomes more pronounced under higher light and stable micronutrient availability, particularly iron. In lower light, leaves tend to appear greener with reduced contrast. Unlike some red plants, this variety does not rely solely on high stress conditions to display color, but benefits from balanced fertilization.

Did You Know?
The contrasting vein pattern in “Rosanervig” is caused by uneven distribution of pigments within the leaf tissue. Chlorophyll dominates the leaf surface while anthocyanins concentrate along the veins, creating the distinct pink network rather than a uniform red coloration.

Tank Size: 20 L (5 gallons) or larger recommended. Larger tanks allow the plant to develop fuller stems and more visible leaf patterning.

Plant Placement: Best used as a midground to background transition plant. Unlike solid red stems that act as focal points, “Rosanervig” works better as a visual bridge between green and red plant groups. It pairs well with plants like Bacopa Caroliniana or Hygrophila Polysperma for contrast, and can soften the transition toward more intense red species such as Ludwigia or Alternanthera reineckii.

Compatibility: Suitable for peaceful community aquariums including tetras, rasboras, guppies, Corydoras, shrimp, and snails. Its structure provides moderate cover, while its patterned leaves enhance the visibility of fish with contrasting colors, particularly blue and silver species.

Substrate: Performs best in nutrient-rich substrates that support steady growth. In inert substrates, consistent use of root fertilizers helps maintain leaf quality and coloration stability.

Light: Medium–high intensity (30–60+ PAR) for 8–10 hours per day.

Temperature: 22–28 °C (72–82 °F)

pH: 5.5 – 7.5

Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–12 dGH)

CO₂: Recommended for stable growth and improved leaf development, though not as demanding as some high-end red species.

Care & Propagation: Regular trimming encourages lateral shoots, but this plant tends to grow slightly more open than compact varieties like AR Mini. Replanting tops helps maintain density, while removing older lower stems prevents thinning and leaf loss near the base.

Portion Size 1 carefully selected stem bundle (typically 5–7 stems), freshly trimmed and ready for aquarium planting.

Plant Size Stems are usually 5–12 cm (2–4 in) tall at the time of packaging.

Plant Type
Submerged-grown aquarium stem plants, ready to plant directly into aquarium substrate.

Snail-Free & Aquarium Safe
Plants are grown without chemicals harmful to fish, shrimp, or other aquarium inhabitants and are carefully inspected to ensure they are snail-free.

Transition After Shipping
Some leaves may melt or change appearance after planting as the plant adapts to new aquarium conditions. This is a normal transition and new submerged growth will develop shortly.

Planting Guide

  1. Remove the protective plastic packaging.
  2. Gently remove the filter floss and rubber band holding the stems together.
  3. Rinse the stems gently with clean water.
  4. Separate the bundle into individual stems.
  5. Plant each stem about 2–3 cm (1–1.5 in) deep into the substrate.
  6. Leave small spacing between stems so they have room to grow and spread.
  7. If a stem floats out, plant it slightly deeper or at a slight angle to help it anchor.

Tip
Aquascaping tweezers from our aquascaping tool set can make planting stem plants easier and allow precise placement in the substrate.
