Creates strong focal contrast
Stands out against both dark hardscape and green plant backgrounds.
Slow, stable growth
Maintains its appearance over time without frequent trimming.
Origin: Cultivated form of Anubias barteri (West Africa)
Type: Rhizome plant
Growth Rate: Slow
Size: Height: 10–25 cm (4–10 in) Width: 10–20 cm (4–8 in)
Natural Habitat: The parent species grows along shaded riverbanks and submerged roots in West Africa, where stable water conditions and low light support thick, durable leaves.
Special Considerations: Variegated portions contain less chlorophyll, so growth is slower and requires stable conditions. Avoid very intense light, which may stress lighter leaf areas. Do not bury the rhizome.
Did You Know? Variegation is a genetic mutation that reduces chlorophyll in parts of the leaf, which is why the white areas grow more slowly and make the plant more valuable and unique.
Tank Size: Suitable for aquariums 20 L (5 gallons) or larger
Plant Placement: Best used as a focal plant attached to rocks or driftwood where its variegation is clearly visible. Works well in open areas or near the front of the layout to highlight its pattern. Pairs effectively with darker plants such as Anubias barteri, Bucephalandra “Belindae”, and Bucephalandra “Biblis”, while background stems like Rotala rotundifolia “Orange Juice” and Ludwigia repens “Rubin” provide color contrast. Mosses such as Taxiphyllum barbieri (Java moss) can be used nearby to soften transitions.
Compatibility: Suitable for aquariums including honey gouramis, betta fish, ember tetras, black neon tetras, and Corydoras panda, along with shrimp such as Amano shrimp and crystal red shrimp. Its sturdy leaves tolerate interaction from fish, while its strong visual presence makes it best suited for calmer species that do not overshadow its appearance.
Substrate: Rhizome should not be buried; attach to rocks or driftwood
Light: Low to moderate (15–40 PAR) for 6–8 hours daily
Temperature: 22–28 °C (72–82 °F)
pH: 6.0 – 7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (3–12 dGH)
CO₂: Not required
Care & Propagation:
Maintain stable conditions and avoid sudden changes. Growth is slow due to variegation. Propagate by carefully dividing the rhizome, ensuring each section has healthy green tissue to sustain growth.
Portion Size 1 carefully selected rhizome plant attached to natural lava rock, ready for aquarium placement.
Plant Size Plants are typically 5–7 cm (2–3 in) tall depending on the species and growth stage.
Plant Type Rhizome plant securely attached to lava rock for easy placement in the aquarium.
Snail-Free & Aquarium Safe Plants are grown without chemicals that could harm fish, shrimp, or other aquarium inhabitants and are carefully inspected to ensure they are snail-free.
Transition After Shipping Some older leaves may change appearance as the plant adapts to new aquarium conditions. Healthy new leaves will grow from the rhizome.
Planting Guide
- 1.Remove the protective plastic packaging.
- 2.Rinse the plant and lava rock gently with clean water.
- 3.Place the lava rock directly on the aquarium substrate or position it within your aquascape.
- 4.Ensure the rhizome remains above the substrate and is not buried.
If preferred, you may carefully remove the fishing line and attach the plant to driftwood, rocks, or aquarium decorations.
Tip Place this plant in a visible area with a darker background to enhance the contrast of its variegated leaves.
Aquascaping tweezers and scissors from your aquascaping tool set make it easier to position plants and adjust surrounding growth without disturbing the layout.
