Origin: Taiwan

Type: Moss

Growth Rate:
Slow to Moderate

Size: Height: 3–8 cm (1–3 in) Width: Forms dense spreading mats

Natural Habitat: Taiwan Moss grows in shaded mountain streams where cool, clear water flows over rocks and submerged tree roots. These environments typically provide stable temperatures and gentle water movement.

Special Considerations: Moderate water flow helps prevent debris accumulation within the dense moss structure. Occasional trimming keeps the growth compact and healthy.

Did You Know?
Taiwan Moss became widely known in the aquarium hobby during the early 2000s when aquascapers began importing new moss varieties from East Asia. Its tight branching pattern made it ideal for creating detailed aquascaping textures such as moss-covered rocks and miniature trees.

Tank Size: 10 L (2.5 gallons) or larger recommended.

Plant Placement: Often used to cover driftwood branches or rock structures, creating natural aquascape details. It pairs well with plants such as Java fern and Bacopa caroliniana, while background plants like Limnophila sessiliflora add depth.

Compatibility: Highly beneficial for aquariums containing shrimp and small schooling fish. Shrimp such as cherry shrimp and crystal shrimp use the moss as shelter and feeding grounds. Small fish like green neon tetras often swim among moss-covered hardscape.

Substrate: Attach to hardscape surfaces.

Light: Low to moderate lighting.

Temperature: 20–28 °C (68–82 °F)

pH: 6.0 – 7.5

Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.

CO₂: Optional.

Care & Propagation: Trim regularly to keep moss compact. Loose pieces can be reattached to propagate new growth.

Portion Size 1 plastic cup portion (3.25 oz) filled with healthy aquarium moss. This portion can typically cover a small piece of driftwood, several rocks, or multiple aquascape accents depending on how it is divided.

Plant Size Moss portions vary naturally in shape and density depending on growth stage.

Plant Type Loose moss portion suitable for attaching to driftwood, rocks, mesh, or other aquascape hardscape.

Snail-Free & Aquarium Safe
Plants are grown without chemicals that could harm fish, shrimp, or other aquarium inhabitants and are carefully inspected to ensure they are snail-free.

Transition After Shipping
Moss may appear slightly compressed after shipping but will expand naturally once placed in the aquarium.

Planting Guide

  1. 1.Remove the moss from the plastic cup and rinse gently with clean water.
  2. 2.Separate the moss into smaller portions if desired.
  3. 3.Spread the moss over rocks, driftwood, mesh, or decorations.
  4. 4.Secure the moss using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe glue.
  5. 5.Over time the moss will attach naturally and begin to grow.
