Microsorum Narrow Leaf

Microsorum Narrow Leaf

Quantity

Java Fern Narrow Leaf – Microsorum pteropus “Narrow Leaf” is a hardy rhizome aquarium plant with long, slim green leaves that create a softer and more elegant look than regular Java Fern. Its narrow leaf shape gives planted aquariums natural movement and works especially well around driftwood, stones, and shaded hardscape.

🌱 Beginner Level: Java Fern Narrow Leaf is one of the most reliable plants for new aquarium hobbyists. It tolerates low-tech setups, does not require CO₂, grows well in low to medium light, and should be attached to driftwood, lava rock, or aquascaping stone instead of being buried in the substrate.

Ideal for Nature Aquarium, jungle, riverbank, driftwood, low-tech, and shaded aquascapes
Its long narrow leaves create a natural flowing texture that works beautifully around wood, stones, caves, and vertical hardscape.

More elegant than regular Java Fern
The slimmer leaves create a lighter, more refined look, making it useful when regular Java Fern feels too broad or heavy in the layout.

Perfect for attaching to driftwood and rock
Java Fern Narrow Leaf is excellent for spider wood, mopani wood, lava rock, dragon stone, seiryu stone, and shaded aquascape corners where the rhizome can stay exposed.

Excellent green texture plant
Its narrow leaves contrast nicely with broad-leaf plants such as Anubias barteri, Anubias Coffeefolia, and Bucephalandra Pandora, while also softening stronger stem groups like Rotala indica, Bacopa caroliniana, and Ludwigia repens.

Great with colourful fish and shrimp
The clean green leaves make red, blue, orange, and silver fish stand out. It looks especially good with neon tetras, cardinal tetras, ember tetras, chili rasboras, harlequin rasboras, honey gouramis, pearl gouramis, bettas, guppies, blue dream shrimp, cherry shrimp, and amano shrimp.

Low-maintenance and long-lasting
Because it grows slowly and does not need frequent trimming, Java Fern Narrow Leaf is perfect for aquascapes where you want stable structure, natural texture, and easy care.

Origin: Southeast Asia

Type: Rhizome plant / attached plant

Growth Rate: Slow to medium

Size: Height: 15–35 cm / 6–14 in

Width: 10–25 cm / 4–10 in depending on age and placement

Natural Habitat: Java Fern grows along shaded tropical streams, riverbanks, waterfalls, and humid forest margins where it attaches to rocks, roots, and submerged wood. It is naturally adapted to growing on hard surfaces rather than deeply rooted in soil.

Special Considerations: Do not bury the rhizome. The thick horizontal rhizome must remain above the substrate or attached to hardscape. If buried, it may rot. Java Fern Narrow Leaf grows best in stable water with gentle flow and moderate nutrients. Very strong light can encourage algae on older leaves.

Did You Know?
Java Fern can reproduce by forming small plantlets on mature leaves. These baby ferns can eventually be separated and attached to new pieces of wood or rock, making it one of the easiest aquarium plants to propagate naturally.

Tank Size: Suitable for aquariums 20 L / 5 gallons or larger, including nano tanks, betta tanks, shrimp tanks, and peaceful community aquariums.

Plant Placement: Best used as a midground to background attached plant. Attach Java Fern Narrow Leaf to driftwood, lava rock, seiryu stone, dragon stone, or shaded hardscape. It works beautifully behind Anubias nana Petite, beside Bucephalandra Pandora, above Java Moss, and in front of taller background plants such as Vallisneria nana, Bacopa caroliniana, or Rotala indica.

Compatibility: Suitable for peaceful aquariums with bettas, guppies, endlers, neon tetras, cardinal tetras, ember tetras, rummynose tetras, harlequin rasboras, chili rasboras, honey gouramis, pearl gouramis, Corydoras, kuhli loaches, Otocinclus, shrimp, and snails. Its firm leaves also make it more resistant to light grazing than delicate stem plants, making it useful in tanks with active fish.

Substrate: Substrate is optional. This plant is best attached to hardscape. If placed near substrate, keep the rhizome fully exposed and allow only the roots to grow downward into gravel, sand, or aquasoil.

Light: Low to medium (15–50 PAR).

Temperature: 20–28°C / 68–82°F

pH: 6.0 – 7.8

GH: 3–15 dGH

CO₂: Not required. CO₂ can improve growth slightly, but Java Fern Narrow Leaf grows very well in low-tech aquariums without added CO₂.

Care & Propagation:
Remove older, damaged, or algae-covered leaves close to the rhizome using clean scissors. To propagate, separate healthy rhizome sections or allow baby plantlets to develop on mature leaves before gently removing and attaching them to hardscape.

Portion Size: 1 carefully selected Java Fern Narrow Leaf plant, freshly packed and attached to Lava rock, ready for aquarium placement.

Plant Size: Small to medium rhizome plant with narrow green leaves and visible roots. Size may vary depending on current stock.

Plant Type: Rhizome aquarium plant / attached plant. Best attached to driftwood, lava rock, or aquascaping stone.

Snail-Free & Aquarium Safe: Plants are grown without chemicals that could harm fish, shrimp, or other aquarium inhabitants and are carefully inspected to ensure they are snail-free.

Transition After Shipping:
Some older leaves may develop dark spots, yellowing, or minor melting after shipping as the plant adapts to new aquarium conditions. This is normal. Java Fern grows slowly, so new leaves may take time to appear, but healthy rhizomes usually adapt well.

Planting Guide

  1. Remove the protective plastic packaging.
  2. Rinse the plant gently with clean water.
  3. Inspect the rhizome and remove any damaged leaves.
  4. Do not bury the rhizome in the substrate.
  5. Attach the plant to driftwood, lava rock, or stone using cotton thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe glue.
  6. Place it in low to medium light with gentle water movement.
  7. Keep the rhizome exposed and allow the roots to naturally grip the hardscape over time.
  8. Trim damaged older leaves near the base if needed.

Tip
Use Java Fern Narrow Leaf to create a soft green transition between hardscape and background plants. It looks especially natural beside dark driftwood, Anubias Coffeefolia, Bucephalandra Pandora, and mosses, while bright fish such as ember tetras, cardinal tetras, chili rasboras, and colourful bettas stand out strongly against its calm green foliage.
