Collection: Fertilisers & Tools

Why Use Fertilizers in Your Aquarium?

Aquarium plants, just like garden plants, need nutrients to grow strong, colorful, and healthy. In nature, plants absorb these nutrients from soil, decaying matter, and fish waste. But in a closed aquarium system, these nutrients can quickly run out — leading to yellowing leaves, slow growth, or weak roots.

That’s where fertilizers come in. They replace and balance the nutrients plants need to thrive, keeping your aquascape lush and vibrant.

Types of Fertilizers in Aquariums

1. Root Fertilizers (Capsules / Tabs)

Placed directly into the substrate.

Best for root-feeding plants like Amazon Swords, Cryptocoryne, and Lotus.

Provide long-term, slow-release nutrients where roots can access them.

2. Liquid Fertilizers

Added directly to the water column.

Ideal for stem plants, mosses, floating plants, and carpeting plants.

Provides nutrients that are absorbed through leaves and stems.

3. Balanced Approach

Many aquariums benefit from a combination of root tabs + liquid fertilizers.

Root feeders get nutrients from the substrate, while water-column feeders get nutrients from the water.

Key Nutrients Plants Need

Nitrogen (N): Encourages leafy growth.

Phosphorus (P): Supports strong roots and flowers.

Potassium (K): Boosts plant health and color.

Micronutrients (Iron, Magnesium, Zinc, Boron, etc.): Keep leaves green, prevent yellowing, and promote photosynthesis.

Benefits of Using Fertilizers

✅ Healthier, greener plants
✅ Faster, stronger root development
✅ Reduced plant melt and yellowing
✅ Balanced growth → fewer algae problems
✅ Creates a natural, stable environment for fish and shrimp
